Why Forced Pregnancy, AKA. Forcing Someone to Remain Pregnant Against Their Will, Needs to be Declared as Torture.

With the Republican party making a power grab by confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, the fear is she is going to be why Roe vs. Wade is overturned, which is what prompted me to write this piece.

I have always been pro-choice; the fact these, so-called, “pro-lifers” want to take away a woman’s right to choose is absolutely appalling and hypocritical considering most don’t care what happens to the children after their born. In addition, there are lawmakers in Texas considering the death penalty for women who get abortions; how is that protecting the sanctity of life?

Consent to sex is not consenting to pregnancy.

If the United States were to classify forced pregnancy as torture, the problem would be solved.

For those not convinced pregnancy is torture, here is the definition, “the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain,” or “inflict severe pain on,” according to Oxford Languages.

Below are the symptoms of pregnancy:

  • Weight Gain
  • Missed Periods
  • Swollen/Sore/Tender Breasts
  • Light Bleeding and Spotting
  • Nausea/Morning Sickness
  • Extreme Fatigue/Tiredness
  • Frequent Urination
  • Dizziness
  • Heartburn
  • Mood Swigs
  • Headaches
  • Backaches
  • Hip Pain
  • Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension
  • Constipation
  • Cramps
  • Anemia
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Acne
  • Diarrhea
  • Stress
  • Temperature Changes
  • Food Cravings and/or Aversions

To some, this might not look like much, but the pain women can go through during pregnancy can be severe while it simultaneously affects their mental health. There is also the risk of either the baby or the woman dying during delivery. By denying women the ability to have an abortion, they are forcing women to go through the, potentially, agonizing symptoms of pregnancy; forcing the women to remain pregnant against their will would be putting them through torture. Pro-lifers condone torture. By classifying forced pregnancy as torture, it would tell the states they cannot take away a woman’s right to choose even if Roe vs Wade is overturned.
